Providing Comprehensive Broadcast and Sports Presentation Lighting for a Prestigious Sporting Events

Commonwealth Sports

For over 40 years, we have been at the forefront of broadcast and sports presentation lighting. For us, being part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was a wonderful opportunity to honour and celebrate every athlete’s achievements respectfully, leaving a legacy of inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability.

The Brief

We were appointed as the Official Broadcast Lighting Provider for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after a comprehensive and competitive tender process. We were awarded a major contract to supply the complete sports and broadcast lighting package across a wide variety of sports, supplying 19 different sporting venues. To ensure we complied with the Government's corporate social responsibility vision, we needed to consider our impact from an economic, social, and environmental perspective throughout.

Our Approach

We provided fully operational broadcast lighting, sports lighting and sports presentation systems for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

To meet the Host Broadcaster requirement of production of multiple sports from many different Venues simultaneously, there was a need for all Venues to have a common event style or ‘look’. Lighting played a central role in shaping this environment and achieving this objective. High quality broadcast images and slow-motion replays are an expectation of global audiences, so we designed and produced our own custom, high performance LED fixtures ensuring a flicker free high CRI dimmable lighting solution.

Our specification delivered the needs of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Sports Federation requirements including mixed zones and harmonised them with a common approach for all the warmup facilities. At all times, the needs of both athletes and the Host Broadcaster, covering both televised competition and warm up facilities were taken into consideration.

Sustainability and Social Value

We maintained our focus on sustainability and social value throughout the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. We were incredibly proud to deliver over £300,000 worth of sustainability and social value.

Key areas of sustainability that were measured and reported on were CO2 saved in the delivery of the project through initiatives to reduce the carbon intensity of processes (e.g., through investing in electric company vehicles and installing a 120kw solar panel system to the roof of our warehouse), low emission miles driven and reducing waste to landfill.

We generated social value by provisioning mental health training and access to mental health resources for all staff, offering work experience placements for young people looking for a way into the industry, training staff in the area of modern slavery, creating an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy and by prioritising procurement and resourcing from within the local Birmingham area.

Additional Highlights

Our CEO, Alastair Currie was honoured to be invited to present the medals for the table tennis men’s singles final categories 8-10 and the men’s light welterweight category.

As part of our social value commitments, we provided a social media and marketing work experience placements for five media and journalism students from Coventry College. During the placement, the students gained first-hand experience running and managing a marketing and social media campaign on behalf of SLX showcasing our involvement in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. They also gained insight into our industry and how events of this scale are handled from the perspective of an Official Provider.

The Results

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was an incredible success. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies alone were broadcast live to 134 countries. BBC Sport’s coverage of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was streamed a record-breaking 57.1 million times during the 11-days of sport.

Across the 19 different sporting venues, sports Lighting and sports Presentation systems played an integral role in keeping the common ‘look’ and style of the events. By combining our expertise with the solutions, we provided, we were able to successfully achieve this whilst meeting all the needs of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Sports Federation.
