Lighting Programme launched in 2018, began as an initiative to support final-year university students by offering free equipment rentals for their projects. Over the years, it has transformed into a full-fledged platform, providing students with not only equipment but also opportunities to connect, network, and gain hands-on experience in the industry.
We are thrilled to introduce our Cohort of 2024/25, featuring five talented students from across the UK! These individuals stood out for their creativity, passion, and ambition.
The successful students are: Eoin Beaton, Ed Frearson, Kassia Goosen, Ghoti Fisher and Ben Lucas.
Meet Eoin Beaton
Eoin is a Scottish lighting designer and programmer currently studying at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He enjoys designing contemporary plays and musicals. He is currently lighting designer for After Life by Jack Thorne at the RCS. He aims to explore how hire companies are supporting more sustainable productions and how designers can collaborate to further those efforts.
Meet Ed Frearson
Ed is a final-year Technical Theatre student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Passionate about lighting design and programming for theatre and live events, he’s excited to connect and collaborate with others through the Lighting Programme.
Ed has already benefited from the equipment rental included in the Lighting Programme, utilising a variety of our equipment for his final year Graduation Project, Behind The Iron. Stay tuned as we will be sharing more information about this.
Meet Kassia Goosen
Kassia is currently working as the lighting designer for Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s ‘Treasure Island’ at the Redgrave Theatre, as well as being 1st AD for the scenes project, at Christchurch Studios.
Kass was made aware of the programme when SLX visited Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Kass felt it would be an incredible chance to learn more about lighting and how a company like SLX runs. In addition she felt it would be a great opportunity to make lots of connections in the industry and meet like-minded individuals. Through the Lighting Programme, Kass has already been given the opportunity to rig at The London Palladium, where SLX supply the house lighting rig, which was a great experience. Kass met some wonderful people who she hopes to work with in the future!
Meet Ghoti Fisher
Ghoti Fisher is a theatrical lighting designer from the United States, currently in her final year at LAMDA. This year, she will be designing the lighting for three productions. Ghoti is eager to challenge herself within the supportive environment of the programme, aiming to grow and reach her full potential.
Meet Ben Lucas
Ben Lucas, from The Guildford School of Acting (GSA), aspires to excel as both a Production Electrician and Lighting Designer. He is passionate about the blend of science and art in transforming spaces and has a particular interest in Set Electrics and Eye Candy Effects. Through our Lighting Programme, Ben is eager to immerse himself, expanding his network across the TV and events sectors. With mentorship and opportunities provided by SLX, he’s excited for what lies ahead. Ben hopes to continue building valuable connections and receiving tailored professional advice to thrive in this dynamic industry.
As the programme unfolds, we’ll be sharing regular updates and insights into their journeys.
